Kimberly Carlson is an Associate Professor at New York University’s Department of Environmental Studies. She is an environmental scientist dedicated to understanding how human activities affect both the environment and human society. Carlson's research has focused on answering two broad questions: 1) What are the environmental impacts of cropland agriculture? and 2) What are the intended and unintended effects of private environmental governance initiatives? Her work has contributed to fields including land systems science and conservation science. Carlson received her PhD from Yale University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology with Honors from Stanford University, and was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment.

His research focuses on how land use and more broadly land systems can contribute to sustainability. His main current project is the ERC project LUDEMO which investigates the linkages between land use, sustainability, and democratic backsliding.

His research focuses on land-system change and its interactions with rural livelihoods, food security, carbon dynamics, and biodiversity. A core component of his work is the analysis of climate change impacts on agriculture, including mitigation and adaptation strategies. His regional expertise centers on the Western Balkans, the post-Soviet region, and, in particular, Ukraine, where he examines land-use change, agricultural transformation, and resilience under conditions of political, economic, and environmental stress. He is a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the Global Land Programme (GLP, https://glp.earth).
